GOING FOR IT!
Irondequoit wrestler Derek Woodall finished
third in sectionals and fourth in SuperSectionals last year as
a junior. After a rigorous off-season, this winter he won the
Section V Class B title at 170 pounds and then captured
Supers to earn a spot in Friday’s Division I state championships.

Mr. Chris Adams, a veteran member of our security team.
After his doctor told Adams he needed to lose weight, he
lost 78 pounds in five months. Find out how and why in

WIRQ-FM TURNS 60! 
The student-run IHS radio station
celebrated its 60th anniversary on Jan. 7, 2020.


FOOTBALL, FRIENDSHIP AND PERSPECTIVE:
The 0-4 IHS
football team gained more than just five straight wins
last fall after it was paired with a young boy from the
Muddy's Buddies program. Players and coaches gained
perspective on life.

NEW THERAPY DOG! Simon, a 9-year-old mixed breed,
became the West Irondequoit Central School District’s
first therapy dog in January. He works closely with
Dake Junior HS counselor and his owner, Ms. Colleen Graham.


TURNING THE PAIGE: IHS senior point guard Alahna Paige
signs her national letter of intent to play basketball for
Division II Daemen College in Buffalo.


TAMPA-BOUND! Senior midfielder Caden Mann signed
his national letter of intent this week to play lacrosse
for the University of Tampa.


GEO BEE! Dake Junior High School seventh-grader
Evan Gold won the Geography Bee, sponsored by
National Geographic, on Thursday. It’s the third
straight year he has won.


DO YOUR PART! Tom Murphy & Rick Yarosh from the
Sweethearts & Heroes organization delivered their
inspirational & poignant message about having empathy
for all and standing up to bullies on Friday at IHS. It was
the second straight year they presented their powerful
message to Dake Junior High School students.


HEAR FROM THE GIRLS! The IHS girls volleyball team
is headed back to the state final four for the first time
since 2008. Hear players Martha Curtin and Barbie Smith
along with asst. coach Katie Cushman (Plukas), who played
on that squad, talk about their journey after losing the past
two years in regionals. 


STATE SEND-OFF IN STYLE FOR VOLLEYBALL! Watch the
entire high school student body line the halls to wish the
girls volleyball team luck at the state championships
this weekend in Glens Falls.


MAKING A SPLASH!
Junior Alicia Wood set a pair of school records in winning the 100-yard freestyle and 200 individual medley at the Section V Class B swimming championships. She also was on the winning medley relay team. On Friday, she takes aim at the state championships in Ithaca! Good luck, Alicia!

becoming the first boy in school history to win a
Section V individual cross country championship.

and Annalee Capuano reflect on their great season
as they head to the state championships!


GRATEFUL: That's what Dena Kropman and Andrea Klips
teach their Southlawn 2nd-graders to be about veterans
and Veteran's Day each year - its meaning & why we
celebrate. Kropman's son-in-law, IHS grad/veteran Angel Pagan,
will send letters, stories and poetry from the students to his
military friends overseas to let them know West Irondequoit cares!

CONVO WITH CULP: How did Elijah Culp get started
in music? To what does he attribute his success? The elite
IHS musician, whose best instrument he admits is his voice,
sits down for a conversation. He and other top high school
musicians nationwide head to to Orlando on Nov. 7 for
the National Association for Music Education Conference.
The senior was chosen for the All-National Honor Ensembles
Mixed Choir. He is among 239 other terrific young vocalists
nationwide.



OLD BROOKVIEW ROAD! Watch the fun inside the classroom
of Miss Emily Swanson and her third-graders at Brookview
elementary as they sing their remixed version (with special
school-themed lyrics thanks to Swanson's creativity) of the
hit song, "Old Town Road." We call it, "Old Brookview Road."


HEADS UP! Distracted driving? What about distracted
 walking? Paying attention is a two-way street. If you see
students with their noses in their phones, tell 'em Heads Up!

HIP HOP HALLOWEEN BALL! No other way to kick off Halloween week than with a spooky spotlight on music teacher Rob Line conducting his group of Seneca School performers, Miss Stata's 3rd-graders! It's based on the book, "Shake Dem Halloween Bones," by W. Nikola-Lisa. It ROCKS!


BOOSTING LITERACY! About a year after planning commenced, a joint project between the Briarwood Triangle Neighborhood Association, the Town of Irondequoit and our Briarwood School resulted in the opening celebration of a Little Free Library on Oct. 25, 2019. It's the third LFL in the District, joining one at two other K-3 schools, Listwood and Colebrook.


HALLOWEEN SAFETY: Officer Lawton of the Irondequoit Police Department gives some tips for trick or treaters.


LEARNING ABOUT SPORTS MARKETING! Rochester Red Wings Senior Director of Sales Matt Cipro visited with Mr. Lou DiCesare’s marketing classes at IHS. The 20-year employee spoke about long-range planning, building business partnerships, ROC Plates, fireworks and other promotional nights -- throwing a “party” at Frontier Field 70 times a year.


SAFETY FIRST, PLEASE: A special message from Irondequoit Police Chief Tantalo and our Superintendent, Dr. Aaron Johnson, to motorists near our schools and around town.


NEW RIDE IS BIG HIT! If you missed your chance to get on this giant spider, a new ride at the 2019 Fall Harvest Festival, based on the line to take a turn — the monstrous arachnid will be back next year!!


CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT! The second annual West Irondequoit Foundation Cornhole Tournament attracted 48 teams to Camp Eastman on Saturday, September 28, 2019. It’s the non-profit organization’s biggest single-day annual  fundraising event!


EMBRACING A DIFFERENT CULTURE: This week IHS has hosted some German exchange students! West Irondequoit has been exchanging with Emden, Germany since 2003. This year, our seventh exchange, started in August, as 14 IHS students visited Emden and several other German cities and sites, such as Berlin and Weimar. This week our new friends got to experience life at IHS and West Irondequoit, accompanied by two of their teachers. They also will visit Niagara Falls.


THE POWER OF WORDS: Ms. Jennifer Bonfanti's second-graders at Colebrook elementary have read this week from the book, What Does It Mean To Be An American? They've learned about words such as diversity, kindness and how to be respectful to one another in their classroom, school and community.

WE REMEMBER: Senior Jamie Cicotta and sophomores Abby Gilbert and Jesse Vida of the IHS Chorale sang the National Anthem at the Town of Irondequoit’s 9/11 ceremony on Sept. 11, 2019.


SAFER SCHOOLS: West Irondequoit Schools have started using the Raptor Visitor Management System starting with the 2019-20 school year.


IHS FRESHMAN ORIENTATION: The Class of 2023 was welcomed on Wednesday to IHS by Link Crew and some faculty as they prepare to start their high school careers!


FALL SPORTS START! The 2019-20 school year kicked off on Aug. 19 and 10 varsity squads will compete this fall for IHS!


SIGN UP FOR PARENT PORTAL! The Parent Portal gives parents/students secure access to student data managed within Infinite Campus. Contact information, attendance records, teacher email addresses and report cards can all be accessed via the Portal – as long as you have an account - and this year it's the ONLY WAY TO SEE BUS SCHEDULES.


STATEMENT FROM WICSD: Dr. Tim Terranova, Deputy Superintendent at WICSD, provides an update on the data security breach reported by one of our vendors, Pearson Clinical Assessment.


WESTERMAN NEW DIRECTOR: Veteran educator Mrs. Laura Westerman is the new Director of the Teaching Learning Center at the Evans & McGraw building. A science teacher in West Irondequoit for 14 years, she will now focus on professional development for our teachers/staff.
