Letter from Dr. Aaron Johnson to WICSD parents, guardians, students and staff:

While our state does not have a confirmed case of the corona virus or COVID-19, we are aware of concerns from people in our community and around the world about the spread of the virus. We want to let you know our district leaders and head nurse are closely monitoring this situation and are following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NYS Department of Health, as well as the Monroe County Department of Health and the State Education Department.

The Monroe County Health Department will contact any school district if a known COVID-19 case emerges. If the district becomes aware that a student or staff member is diagnosed, it will notify staff and parents/guardians. If a student or staff member shows respiratory symptoms, we will follow our current practices for handling respiratory illnesses. We have infectious disease protocols in place and have taken steps, such as cleaning and disinfecting throughout buildings, to minimize the spread of illnesses. Here are good reminders for everyone:

*Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
* Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home when you are sick.
* Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
* Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

If you or a family member begin showing symptoms of a respiratory disease and suspect it may be COVID-19, contact your healthcare provider. Monroe County has posted information about COVID-19. Here is a link to that: https://www2.monroecounty.gov/health-coronavirus. That site also provides the CDC safeguards on travel. The state has established a hotline (888-364-3065).

No clubs or groups of students from West Irondequoit are scheduled to travel internationally during spring break. Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.

Sincerely,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed.D
Superintendent of Schools
