Business students from IHS turned in a strong showing on Thursday at RIT in the 2018-19 DECA Regional Competition highlighted by a first-place finish in the RIT Communications Review Challenge. The prize included a certificate and $1,000 check to the DECA Club at IHS, which is guided by teachers Mr. Louis DiCesare, Mrs. LaVon Bucciarelli, Mrs. Jeanine Lent.

The IHS School Leadership team led by Katherine Mayer, Cam Goebert, Chase Miller, Derek Woodall and Sara Woodard developed the presentation. RIT announced the challenge in November, asking Region 10 DECA chapters to review its Saunders College website, social media and other communications and evaluate the content, organization, navigation and aesthetics and then create a presentation providing the following information:

* What Saunders communications did you review?

* What are the strengths of Saunders College of Business communications? Note why you feel these are strengths.

* What are three suggestions for improving these Saunders College of Business communications?

There are nearly 50 different competitive marketing events for students at the regional DECA level. There are only four finalists awarded for team events and five for individual events. Winners earned the right to represent Monroe County (Region 10) at the DECA State Career Conference (SCC) in their respective event. The SCC will be March 6-8 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where 2,000-plus business students from around the state will compete. More than 500 students and a dozen local schools competed at Thursday’s event.

DECA enhances preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, applying learning in the context of business, connecting to business and the community and promoting competition. DECA students leverage their experience to become academically prepared, community-oriented, professionally responsible and experienced leaders.
