NYS Assessment Testing

March 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The New York State Department of Education has made significant changes to the NYS 3-8 Assessments due to feedback received from schools, parents and other key stakeholders. Additional information regarding these changes can be viewed on the submenu of this page.

From Wednesday, April 11th to Thursday, April 12th your son/daughter will take the NYS ELA Assessment. This test is designed to assess your child's achievement in ELA (reading and writing). The test is now divided into two sections. Your child will read passages and, depending on the day, respond to multiple choice, short constructed response and extended response questions.

From Tuesday, May 1st to Wednesday, May 2nd your son/daughter will take the NYS Mathematics Assessment. This test is designed to assess your child's achievement in the area of mathematics. The test is divided now into two sections that consist of multiple choice, constructed response, and extended response questions.

We have utilized these assessments as part of a comprehensive assessment package through instructional reports which help us inform instruction at both the district and student level. Our focus remains to provide daily high-quality instruction.

In order to best help your child prepare for the assessment and limit anxiousness, we encourage you to assist your child by:
  • Providing him/her with a good night’s rest the evenings prior to the assessments.
  • Providing your child with a nourishing breakfast before each school day.
  • Continuing to keep things normal and not over alarming at home. If your child does demonstrate some increased anxiety, reassure him/her to simply do the best s/he can!
Once the results have arrived you will be informed about your child’s progress. If you are interested in taking a closer look at some samples of the assessment check out www.engageny.org. and our WICSD website and parent university. Thank you for your continued support.
