Prior to that, Johnson served as Principal at Byron-Bergen Junior-Senior High School in Genesee County from 2010-15 following a two-year stint as an Assistant Principal for Gates Chili High School. He spent the first 10 years of his career teaching earth science and biology at Gates Chili.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in science at SUNY Brockport in 1997 and his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education in 2015. He was the Warner School's Tyll van Geel Educational Leadership award-winner. He grew up in Sinclairville, Chautauqua County, south of Buffalo, and is a graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central Schools.

Johnson and his wife, Ainslie, have a son, Abel. Ainslie teaches at Gates Chili.

My family and I could not be more excited to be joining the West Irondequoit community,” Johnson said shortly after his appointment. “The West Irondequoit Central School District has a brilliant reputation as an innovative leader and champion for children in the Rochester region that makes it an excellent place to live, learn and lead.
